I will no longer be silent on this. I was molested by this monster when he was a seminarian in the 1970's. He is a child sex abuser and a rapist. If you were molested by this man either when he was a seminarian or after he became a priest, say something.

He has been removed from active ministry but many have bought into his self righteous display of innocence during 2002. He continues to arrogantly deny any wrongdoing to this day.

Father Bukoski is a monster. I can guarantee you that one or more of his defenders will respond to this. If you believe in his innocence, be aware that you have bought into his deception. First impressions are sometimes correct, especially with this evil man. Many are put off by him at first but then he skillfully coaxes you into trusting him. If you believe and trust in him, you have placed yourself into his control.

Sex-abuse suit filed against ex-priest

A lawsuit charging sexual abuse was filed yesterday in state court against the Rev. Joseph Bukoski III, who was removed from his position as pastor of a Lahaina church last year.

Eugene Saulibio's suit is also against Sister Claudia Wong, a Catholic social worker, and The Fathers of The Sacred Hearts.

The suit says Bukoski gave Saulibio alcohol and drugs and sexually assaulted him in 1976. At the time, Saulibio was a 15-year-old student at Saint Louis High School in Honolulu, and Bukoski was a priest at The Fathers of the Sacred Hearts center in Kane'ohe.

The suit asks for damages to be determined at trial.

Bukoski was removed from his position as pastor of Maria Lanakila Church in Lahaina, Maui, last August after allegations of sexual misconduct with two minors more than 20 years ago were made public. In April, Bukoski lost an appeal to Rome, ending any attempt to get his job back as pastor of the church.

Bukoski, 50, who could not be reached for comment yesterday, denied the initial allegation of misconduct. He has also received support from hundreds of former Maria Lanakila parishioners who circulated petitions, wrote letters and held vigils and prayer services in his honor.

Saulibio says in the suit that The Fathers of The Sacred Hearts and Wong conspired to protect the Catholic church and Bukoski by disregarding knowledge of the priest's sexually inappropriate behavior and continuing to employ him.

The Fathers of The Sacred Hearts and Wong could not be reached for comment yesterday.

Patrick Downes, a spokesman for the Honolulu Diocese, which was not named in the suit, said Honolulu Bishop Francis X. DiLorenzo has no comment.

Downes said when the bishop removed Bukoski from public ministry he essentially returned him to The Fathers of the Sacred Hearts, where he is a member of the congregation.

In the suit, Saulibio said he sought advice and counseling from the church in May 2002. Saulibio alleges Wong purposely misled him during counseling by attempting to cast doubt in his mind that the incident had occurred, according to the suit.

Many thanks to Sortasaved and EyesSkyward for participating in this discussion. Interesting to note that another person thousands of miles away from Joseph's homestate could be as equally as disgusted with him as his victims were in Hawaii.

Rumor has it that Joseph, while dutifully "being a good monk" (gag), has managed to build another fort on the grounds of the Sacred Hearts Center in Kaneohe. I hope the local Police Department is getting a clue on this. This is not long ago folks, this is right now, the year is 2003, and he has built another place to either molest more boys or fantasize about molesting boys.

I would imagine that at least a few of the other brothers and priests he is living with there are not buying into his "exemplary performance." But then, we are talking about the Catholic Church so I'm sure most are simply looking the other way. Good grief - imagine having to live there with him and eat his cooking every Tuesday and Thursday! Better check the food for traces of rohypnol and GHB! Kidding of course. Guess I should feel sorry for those who have to live with him, but you know what, I don't.

I know I'm probably overdoing it, but here is another recent article on Bukoski. I'm posting this because of the appalling response Bukoski gave to Mr. Saulibio in the June 27 phone conversation. Check it out. This was published in the May 16 2003 edition of the Honolulu Star Bulletin.

A Hawaii man whose complaint of sexual misconduct led to the dismissal of a Catholic priest last year is seeking $250,000 in damages from the priest and his religious order.

Eugene Saulibio said in the civil suit filed yesterday that the Rev. Joseph Bukoski provided him with drugs and alcohol and sexually assaulted him. The incidents allegedly happened in July 1976 when Saulibio was 15, attending St. Louis School and living at the Kaneohe seminary of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, according to the suit filed by attorney Mark Bernstein.

Saulibio also named the Sacred Hearts order and Sister Claudia Wong, a psychological therapist, as defendants.

He claims that he met with the Rev. Clyde Guerreiro, former Sacred Hearts provincial, last May and described his allegations about Bukoski, who was a religious brother in training to become a priest in 1976.

The suit says Guerreiro arranged for Saulibio to have an appointment with Wong, who was to provide counseling for him. But instead, "plaintiff's session would be used as a means of putting doubt in the mind of the plaintiff ... and gathering information which could be used by the Fathers of the Sacred Hearts in the event that the plaintiff lodged any complaint," the suit alleges.

The suit further claims that Bukoski told Saulibio in a June 27 telephone conversation "that there was nothing that could be done to him because of the statute of limitations, and that while he was sorry that he was caught and sorry that new allegations had resulted in renewed distress for plaintiff, there wasn't much anyone could do about it."

The suit alleges that "from the time Father Bukoski became associated with the Fathers of the Sacred Hearts, through and including the year 2002, he has demonstrated behavioral problems, including inappropriate sexual conduct."

The order continued to retain Bukoski's services and "in so doing, concealed and/or assisted him in concealing his antisocial behavior out of a concern that the disclosure of Father Bukoski's character faults would be more harmful to the Fathers of the Sacred Hearts than permitting Joseph Bukoski to continue to minister to the public," according to the suit.

Hawaii Catholic Bishop Francis DiLorenzo suspended Bukoski as pastor of a Maui church last May after receiving a complaint alleging sexual misconduct 20 years earlier. In August the bishop removed Bukoski from public ministry after a second accusation of sexual abuse of a minor was investigated by the diocesan Standing Committee on Sexual Misconduct.

Bukoski has denied both allegations. He did not respond yesterday to a request for comment. Bukoski's current supervisor and Wong, a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, also could not be reached for comment.

Diocesan spokesman Patrick Downes said he had no comment on the suit and that Bukoski remains under the jurisdiction of his religious order.

No details of the alleged sexual abuse incidents were provided in the past, and the suit does not include many details.

In the suit, Saulibio said that after he learned of news stories last May about the initial allegation against Bukoski, "he suffered severe emotional distress, resulting in a loss of sleep, agitation and panic attacks."

Although Batoon did a bad thing in sexually abusing a minor in the Phillipines, at least he is doing the right thing by volunteering to be defrocked. If only the other sex abusing priests would do the same. Of course, no chance that Bukoski would ever do that - too wrapped up in his own psychodrama. You know, the one where he is "being the good monk" and the bishop who removed him from active ministry is the "pathological bully." Talk about grand delusions . . .

Banished priest to leave ministry

Nearly four months after he was banished from the Diocese of Honolulu for admitting to sexual misconduct with a minor in the Philippines, the Rev. Roberto Batoon has agreed to leave the ministry of the Catholic Church.

Hawai'i church officials were informed of Batoon's intentions in a letter received from the Philippines yesterday, said Patrick Downes, diocese spokesman.

Downes said Batoon volunteered to be defrocked as a result of a recent meeting with Laoag Bishop Ernesto Salgado.

Batoon was removed from his job as administrator of three Moloka'i churches in January after admitting the misconduct, which occurred in Laoag in northern Luzon. Honolulu Bishop Francis X. DiLorenzo ordered Batoon to return home and report to his bishop for possible further action.

The 57-year-old priest, who served in Hawai'i churches since 1997, apparently didn't report to Salgado right away. As late as three weeks ago, Laoag Chancellor Ian Rabigo said his former colleague had failed to show up.

Before moving to Moloka'i in August 2001, Batoon was associate pastor at Our Lady of Good Counsel in Pearl City from 1997 to 1999, and at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in 'Ewa Beach from 1999 to 2001.

Downes said the Honolulu Diocese has not received any similar complaints against Batoon from his work in Hawai'i.

Salgado also indicated that no one had filed a complaint against Batoon in his diocese, Downes said.

Diocese faulted in audit

An audit of the Diocese of Honolulu, part of a nationwide effort to quantify sexual abuse by priests and analyze efforts to assist victims, faulted local church leaders for only recently developing an outreach program for victims and being late in developing "clear standards of behavior" required of priests and other church officials in regular contact with minors.

The audit also ordered the diocese to develop a "safe environment" training program for clergy, educators, parents, employees and volunteers working with children and to make sure that background checks be performed for all personnel in regular contact with children.

The diocese said it recently developed its training program and is working with the city prosecutor's office and its own legal personnel in finalizing the background check program. It also has started an outreach program with Catholic Charities Hawaii and has adopted a code of conduct for priests and other church personnel.

In 10 other areas, the audit found the diocese to be in compliance with directives adopted by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops in 2002 after a devastating clergy sex-abuse scandal shook the church. The diocese was praised for establishing a policy on alleged sexual misconduct within the church in 1990 and for establishing a standing committee to advise the bishop on misconduct allegations.

The audit was one of 195 conducted by the Gavin Group, a Boston consulting firm led by former FBI official Bill Gavin, which examined all dioceses at the behest of U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. A separate study, conducted by the John Jay College Criminal Justice in New York, sought a comprehensive count of how many priests abused minors around the country since 1950. The two local studies were detailed last week by Hawaii Catholic Herald, the official church publication.

In its report to John Jay College, the diocese of Honolulu reported that it had substantiated molestation allegations against five Catholic priests involving at least eight children in Hawai'i since the 1960s, a figure it has made public in the past. The diocese said that none of the priests remains in active ministry and that just $9,000 has been paid as a result of a substantiated allegation money that was paid to a psychiatrist a decade ago to help an abuse victim.

Eugene Saulibio, local representative of the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, or SNAP, a victims' advocacy group, said yesterday the studies were "fundamentally flawed" because they undercounted the number of victims both locally and nationally.

Saulibio also said he has met "with a lot of people who were abused by priests here but who are not part of this report because they're afraid to come forward."

The priests were not identified in the report, but three have been previously made public through lawsuits and public statements from the church:

Joseph Bukoski III was removed as pastor of a Lahaina, Maui, church in 2002 after allegations of sexual abuse of two minors in the 1970s became public. Bukoski lost an appeal to Rome for reinstatement. His two accusers, including Saulibio, filed civil suits against Bukoski last year. He has denied wrongdoing and the suits are pending.
Robert De Otero, accused of molesting two boys at a Kalihi church in the 1980s. Like Bukoski, De Otero was removed from public ministry by Bishop Francis X. DiLorenzo, but still remains a member of the priesthood. A civil lawsuit filed against De Otero by his two alleged victims is pending.
Arthur J. O'Brien Jr., convicted of sexually assaulting a 10-year-old Maui boy in 1989. O'Brien remains a priest but was also removed from the public ministry by DiLorenzo.
The Rev. Roberto Batoon, another priest in Hawai'i who was accused of sexual misconduct in the Philippines was "dismissed to the supervision of his home diocese in the Philippines," said Patrick Downes, diocese spokesman.

Now under investigation are accusations of abuse against a Maryknoll priest, Downes said. The alleged misconduct occurred in the 1960s and is being investigated by the Maryknoll Fathers, Downes said.

Still in litigation against the diocese are allegations brought by a minor against two Hawai'i priests, one of whom died 30 years ago and another out of the ministry for about a decade. Another lawsuit still pending was filed against a priest who once worked in Hawai'i for a religious order but was not assigned to the diocese.

Downes acknowledged yesterday that there are other instances of sexual abuse by priests in Hawai'i that are not covered by the study because the priests were not under the jurisdiction of the local diocese.

For instance, Andrew Mannetta, a priest accused in a lawsuit this year of abusing a minor here from 1998 through 2001, was a member of a New York-based order of priests and was not under the supervision or authority of the Honolulu diocese.

Another, Mark Matson, was convicted here in 2000 of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old boy in Hawai'i Kai. Matson, now serving a 20-year prison term, had been working as a hospital chaplain and was not part of the Hawai'i diocese when the abuse occurred and so was not included in the John Jay study of Hawai'i abuse cases.

Downes said about 530 priests have served in Hawai'i during the 50-year period covered by the John Jay study, meaning that "less than 1 percent" had been found to have abused minors.

SNAP founder and national president Barbara Blaine said in a written statement released from Chicago that the compliance audits were closely controlled by church officials. "Just three of our more than 4,600 members were interviewed" by auditors, Blaine said. "We believe the interviewers only spoke with victims who came forward after June 2002, only to victims who are not involved in litigation, and only to victims whose names they were given by church officials."

Saulibio, Hawai'i's SNAP representative, said yesterday he was not interviewed for the Hawai'i compliance audit.

"It's positive that the church has admitted it has a problem," but he said, "the problem is a lot bigger than the church has admitted."
